This reaction produces two molecules of ethyl linoleate in a 1:2 ratio. These methods have revealed the activation energies for the reaction mechanism to be 61 kJ/mol for the chlorination step and 81 kJ/mol for the dehydroabietic acid hydrolysis step. The thermodynamic analysis shows that this reaction is exothermic and spontaneous at room temperature with an enthalpy change of -50 kJ/mol.
