3,3-Dimethyl-1,2-epoxybutane is a liquid that belongs to the class of epoxides. It is synthesized by reacting isopropyl chloride with an excess of styrene in an organic solvent at elevated temperatures. The product can be purified by distillation and recrystallization. 3,3-Dimethyl-1,2-epoxybutane has been shown to react with alkyl halides to form homologous series of epoxides. This chemical has also been shown to have stereoselective reactions with aldehydes and ketones. The reaction products are liquid compounds that are soluble in organic solvents such as benzene or chloroform.
