3,4-Dimethylbenzophenone is an acidic cationic surfactant that is used in laundry detergent. It aids in the removal of stains and dirt from clothing by lowering the surface tension of water. 3,4-Dimethylbenzophenone can be made by reacting dodecyl chloride with benzophenone under high salt conditions. The reaction mechanism for this process involves acylation of the aromatic hydrocarbon followed by a trifluoromethanesulfonic acid activation. The activated aromatic hydrocarbon then reacts with an acyl halide to form the desired product. 3,4-Dimethylbenzophenone is also used as a raw material for making other chemicals such as nitrobenzene and hydrogen chloride.
