Diallyldimethylammonium chloride is an ionic surfactant that is used in detergents and other cleaning compositions. It is a white, water-soluble solid with a strong odor. Diallyldimethylammonium chloride has been shown to be effective in removing fatty acids from wastewater, as well as aiding in the removal of phosphorus and nitrogen. The synthesis of this compound can be accomplished by reaction of dimethyl ammonium chloride with allyl chloride. This process can be carried out at room temperature under mild conditions, without the need for high temperatures or pressures. The reaction mechanism involves nucleophilic substitution at the carbon adjacent to the chlorine atom on the alkyl chain, leading to formation of a new covalent bond between the carbon and chlorine atom.
