Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid that is important for brain functions and the development of nerve cells. DHA also plays a role in the regulation of gene expression, protein synthesis, and cell membrane fluidity. DHA is found in high concentrations in maternal blood during pregnancy, and low levels have been associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease or type II diabetes. This omega-3 fatty acid is metabolized by the liver to form docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). DHA has been shown to inhibit oxidative injury caused by free radicals and reduce bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. It has also been shown to be effective in treating solid tumours such as breast cancer cells.
