Decarboxyl ofloxacin is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. The drug is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to ofloxacin, its active form. Fluoroquinolones have been detected in lettuce, with desorption occurring at higher temperatures. Decarboxyl ofloxacin has been shown to be metabolized through a number of metabolic transformations, including hydroxylation and biotransformation products. This drug also has a toxic effect on respiratory system cells, which may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis.
