• Beschreibung: Diazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine drug that is used for the treatment of a variety of conditions, such as anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, and alcohol withdrawal. Diazepam has been shown to have anti-convulsant properties. The hydroxyl group on diazepam's side chain is converted to an ester in order to make it more lipid soluble and therefore more readily absorbed by the body. This conversion occurs partially through the action of enzymes found in the liver microsomes of rats and humans. Desmethyldiazepam (DMDZ) is formed from diazepam by the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO). DMDZ has similar pharmacological properties to its parent compound but with a shorter duration of action.Maternal blood levels of DMDZ are higher than those found in serum or plasma, which may be due to differences in protein binding between these two compartments.
