Beschreibung

Diltiazem is a calcium antagonist that inhibits the activity of the enzyme phosphodiesterase, which breaks down cyclic nucleotides. It has been shown to reduce angiotensin levels in humans and decrease filtration rates in rats. Diltiazem also inhibits the uptake of arachidonic acid and plasma kinetics of nitric oxide in humans. The drug has been used successfully as a treatment for chronic hypoxia, but not as a treatment for normoxia or acute hypoxia. The drug was found to be more potent than verapamil at inhibiting calcium ion channels and was taken up by glomerular cells at a slower rate than verapamil. Diltiazem has been shown to inhibit the uptake of arachidonic acid and plasma kinetics of nitric oxide in humans.
