Beschreibung

Sertraline is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used in the treatment of depression. It is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, one with selective affinity for serotonin transporter and the other for norepinephrine transporter. The S-enantiomer has been shown to be more potent than the R-enantiomer. Sertraline hydrochloride is a prodrug that is metabolized into its active form, desmethylsertraline, which binds to serotonin receptors in the brain and prevents their reuptake. This leads to an increase in extracellular levels of serotonin, which can help alleviate depression symptoms. Sertraline hydrochloride has also been shown to have therapeutic effects on cocaine addiction by increasing dopamine levels in some regions of the brain and reducing cocaine cravings.
