It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inducing caspase-independent cell death, which occurs in a pd-l1 dependent manner. This agent also has minimal toxicity in vitro, as it induces cell lysis at high concentrations. 2,4-Diamino-6-hydroxy-5-nitropyrimidine is not active against normal cells.2,4-Diamino-6-hydroxy-5-nitropyrimidine induces mitochondrial membrane depolarization and mitochondrial membrane potential loss in a dose dependent manner. These effects are likely responsible for the induction of caspase independent cell death seen with this drug.
