Diazoxide is a drug that belongs to the class of pharmacological agents. It is used as a primary pulmonary hypertension treatment. Diazoxide is an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation and it also acts on mitochondria in the cells. Diazoxide has been shown to decrease insulin levels in maternal blood, which may be due to its ability to inhibit insulin release from pancreatic beta cells. This drug also has antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to reduce lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation. Diazoxide has been shown to have beneficial effects for bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, due to its antioxidant properties and its ability to inhibit oxidative injury in the gut wall. Diazoxide inhibits channels that are involved in neuronal death, which is associated with stroke-induced brain damage.
