The reaction products of this process are among other things, 1,8-diethyl-1,3,4,9-tetrahydro-pyrano[3,4-b]indole-1-acetic acid methyl ester (DETPA). DETPA has been used as a neutralizing agent in the treatment of textile dyeing effluents and as a flow rate controller in metering pumps. Biological properties of DETPA include antipyretic properties and acid catalytic activity. One of the impurities found in DETPA is 3-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)propionic acid which can be removed by treatment
