L-Lysine is a non-essential amino acid that is found in animal proteins such as dairy and eggs. It is used for the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, which is a complication of diabetes. L-Lysine inhibits the enzyme lysyl oxidase, which crosslinks collagen molecules to form mature collagen fibers. This leads to structural changes in the eye, causing a reduction in neovascularization and prevention of blindness. Chronic exposure to L-lysine has been shown to cause biochemical abnormalities including an increase in creatinine levels and decreased levels of albumin. However, there are no known adverse effects on hematopoietic cells or inflammatory diseases due to L-lysine therapy.
