3,6-Dioxa-8-mercaptooctan-1-ol is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid. 3,6-Dioxa-8-mercaptooctan-1-ol functions by binding to the lectin and adsorbing onto the gold electrode surface. This immobilization technique has been shown to be effective for the diagnosis of childhood diseases such as cystic fibrosis. The gold nanoparticles used in this technique show high surface area and stability for long periods of time.
