Beschreibung

Ezetimibe is a drug that is used for the treatment of high cholesterol. It inhibits the absorption of dietary cholesterol from the intestine by binding to the ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT) and prevents the formation of micelles that are needed for solubilizing dietary lipids. Ezetimibe has been shown to inhibit the activity of carbonyl reductase, which is an enzyme involved in synthesizing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). This prevents the conversion of NADPH to NADP+, inhibiting glycolysis and reducing cellular ATP levels. Ezetimibe also binds to adenine and nicotinamide, preventing their conversion into adenosine monophosphate (AMP), which leads to decreased reactions catalyzed by phosphofructokinase. This reduces the amount of energy produced through glycolysis, resulting in increased efficiency and lessening the need for carbohydrates as a source of energy.
