This chemical has also been shown to inhibit inflammation by inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines, including epidermal growth factor (EGF) and interleukin-8 (IL-8). It may be used to treat chronic cough and chronic bronchitis. 1,1-Dichlorodimethyl ether inhibits the production of EGF by blocking the binding of EGF to its receptor on the surface of cells. The molecule also has an inhibitory effect on IL-8 production via inhibition of protein kinase C. The 1,1-dichlorodimethyl group is a reactive oxygen species that can react with other molecules such as DNA or proteins, leading to damage or even cell death.
