The film inhibits the growth of microorganisms by preventing oxygen from reaching them. The toxicity of 2,5-dithiobiurea may be due to its ability to form metal chelates with transition metals such as copper and zinc. These chelates can bind to DNA and inhibit DNA synthesis. 2,5-Dithiobiurea also inhibits follicular growth in vivo by inhibiting the production of estrogen hormones, which are involved in this process.
