4,5-Dimethoxy-1-cyanobenzocyclobutane is an intermediate in the synthesis of ivabradine. It is produced by reacting 4,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid with cyanoacetic acid in the presence of acetonitrile and potassium carbonate in a refluxing solution. The reaction product crystallizes out from the solution. The chemical formula for 4,5-dimethoxy-1-cyanobenzocyclobutane is CHNO2. It can be synthesized using a variety of methods, including hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions. When heated to 300 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure, it undergoes cyclisation to produce ivabradine.
