It has been found to be a mutant strain that causes fatty acid accumulation in lung homogenates and is associated with choline deficiency. This lipid can be used as a substrate for the synthesis of diacylglycerol and phosphatidylcholine. The 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycerol molecule contains a carbonyl group and a hydroxyl group, which give it a crystalline structure. The hydrogen bonds between the acyl chain and the hydroxyl oxygen are responsible for its polymorphic nature. It can be detected using magnetic resonance spectroscopy because it interacts strongly with protons in water due to its strong hydrogen bond.
