The emission spectrum changes from green to red as the pH increases. 4-(N,N-Diethylamino)salicylaldehyde also exhibits fluorescence enhancement in the presence of metal ions such as Fe3+, Cu2+, or Cr3+. This compound can be used as a fluorescent probe for hydrogen bonding interactions and metal hydroxides.
