This chemical is synergistic with other drugs such as maduramicin ammonium and salinomycin sodium in treating infections caused by tenella. 3,3'-Dinitro diphenyl disulfide binds to the sulfur atom of cysteine residues on proteins in the bacterial cell wall by a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The reaction leads to release of a sulfenic acid or sulfinic acid from cysteine residues, which inhibits cell division.
