It is a reactive intermediate and can be used for the synthesis of esters, ethers, amides, nitriles, and acid chlorides. The activation energy has been calculated to be constant at 20 kcal/mol. Diethyl phenyl orthoformate has been shown to react with acetic acid in the presence of heat to form ethyl acetate and water as products.
