Diethylphenylphosphine is an intermediate in a variety of reactions. It is a coordination complex that reacts with carbon disulphide to form an oxidative carbonylation product. This compound also has been shown to be a good nucleophile and can react with hydroxyl groups to form the corresponding phosphonium salt. Diethylphenylphosphine is synthesized by metathesis reactions, which are catalyzed by the use of a polarizer. The reaction mechanism for diethylphenylphosphine involves an initial oxidation of the carbon disulphide molecule, followed by nucleophilic attack on the resulting radical cation. This reaction creates a new carbon-carbon bond and produces two molecules of diethyl phenylphosphine. Diethylphenylphosphine has been shown to react with water to form hydrogen peroxide.
