Diphenyl isophthalate is a carbonyl compound that has a hydrochloric acid ester group. It reacts with amines to produce an amide, and with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to produce diphenyl p-hydroxybenzoate. This reaction can be used as a model of the autoimmune response in humans. The reaction mechanism for this process is not fully understood, but kinetic data suggests that the rate limiting step is intramolecular hydrogen transfer between diphenyl and the hydrochloric acid ester. Diphenyl isophthalate also reacts with boron nitride to produce polycarboxylic acid compounds with high thermal stability.
