4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) is a coumarin derivative that has been shown to be a good model system for studying cellular Ca2+ uptake. DCM causes an increase in cytosolic Ca2+ levels by inhibiting the Ca2+ pump, which is responsible for transporting Ca2+ ions from the cytosol into the extracellular fluid. DCM has also been shown to have physiological effects on cardiac muscle tissue and can act as a fluorescence probe or laser wavelength converter.
