2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) is a triclosan derivative that has been used as an antimicrobial agent in various products. Triclosan is adsorbed by activated carbon and removed from the water using activated sludge. The ability of 2,4-DCP to inhibit the activity of some enzymes has been shown in a model system. It also caused genotoxic effects and inhibited biochemical reactions, such as malonic acid oxidation and glucose oxidation. Process optimization for the production of 2,4-DCP is difficult because it requires a complicated reaction mechanism with many steps.
