It has also been shown to have antioxidant properties in vivo. 3,4-Dimethoxy-5-hydroxybenzaldehyde may be used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis because it inhibits platelet aggregation and lipoprotein oxidation. The compound prevents the oxidation of prosthetic groups and the formation of adducts with DNA, which can lead to carcinogenesis. 3,4-Dimethoxy-5-hydroxybenzaldehyde is known to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus plantarum.
