6,6-Diphenylfulvene is a compound that has been shown to cleave metal-carbon bonds and have antibacterial activity. It can be prepared by reacting sodium carbonate and malonic acid in the presence of zirconium dichloride. The reaction produces fulvene as an intermediate, which reacts with chloride to form 6,6-diphenylfulvene. This compound can then be used as a bidentate ligand in molecular modeling studies. In addition, it has been found that the bond cleavage of 6,6-diphenylfulvene occurs at an activation energy of 56 kJ/mol.
