These imidazolium cations are then able to bind to and activate epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) on the cell surface. This leads to activation of the EGFR signaling pathway and subsequent production of proteins involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. 1,5-Dimethyl-1H-imidazole also binds metal ions such as iron or copper, which may be important for its activity against cancer cells.
