It binds to the active site of the enzyme and blocks the binding of nucleotides, preventing RNA synthesis. 1-[(2,6-Difluorophenyl)Methyl]-4-Methyl-2-Propan-2-Ylbenzimidazole has been shown to be effective against HIV in vitro and in vivo. This inhibitor has been shown to inhibit both wild type and mutant forms of HIV transcriptase by binding to the same region of the enzyme. The molecule also shows good activity against other types of viruses, including influenza virus, vesicular stomatitis virus and poliovirus.
