The compound inhibits the synthesis of RNA by binding to the ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis. Thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Streptomyces coelicolor, a bacterium used in the production of antibiotics. This compound can be accessed through carbonylation reactions with various amides.
