3-Ethylphenyl isocyanate (3EPI) is a nonselective, high-throughput screening antagonist that binds to the receptor site for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It has been used in vivo studies to investigate the roles of acetylcholine in various functions, such as memory and learning processes. 3EPI has also been used as a marker to identify haloalkyls, surfactants, and alkylthios. The drug has shown fluorescence properties when bound to proteins and is an encapsulating agent that disrupts cell membranes. 3EPI can be detected with nitroblue tetrazolium chloride (NBT).
