Beschreibung

Fulvestrant is a member of the class of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators. Fulvestrant binds to the estrogen receptor and blocks estrogen-mediated signaling pathways in breast cells, inhibiting tumor growth. This can be used as a treatment for breast cancer and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. Fulvestrant is an agonist at adenosine receptors and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in mice. It also has anti-cancer effects, but it needs to be administered at higher doses than those used for other indications. Fulvestrant is a prodrug that is transformed into its active form by hydrolysis of the ester linkages by carbonic anhydrase enzymes in the body. The drug binds to carbonic anhydrase II, which causes inhibition of the enzyme's activity, leading to increased acidity in bodily fluids, including urine, stomach acid, and cerebrospinal fluid.
