3-Ethyladamantan-1-ol is an alcohol that is synthesized from 1,2-ethanediol. This alcohol can be used as a precursor to the synthesis of amides and esters. The compound has been found to have antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties. 3-Ethyladamantan-1-ol has been shown to inhibit the activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 reverse transcriptase and human T cell leukemia virus type I DNA polymerase by acting as a competitive substrate in an enzyme assay. It also inhibits the activity of protein kinase C in rat brain tissue. 3-Ethyladamantan-1-ol has been shown to inhibit the growth of cells in culture by interfering with DNA synthesis and RNA transcription.
