Ethanesulfonic acid is a potent inhibitor of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The inhibition of PCR may be due to its ability to inhibit enzyme activities involved in DNA synthesis, including dinucleotide phosphate enzymes and glycol-ether-sensitive enzymes.
