Eicosane is a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula CH
e. It has a high melting point and low vapor pressure, which makes it useful as a thermal insulator. Eicosane also has a redox potential of -0.137 V, making it an electron acceptor in the reduction of oxygen to water. Eicosane is used to create particle membranes for water treatment through microencapsulation. The reaction solution for this process includes eicosane, sulfur dioxide, and sodium hydroxide. Eicosane undergoes oxidative coupling with sulfur dioxide to form disulfide bonds with the sodium hydroxide and produces hydrogen gas when heated at 250°C.
