Beschreibung

The drug is a macrocyclic lactone that inhibits invertebrate nerve function. It is a derivative of avermectin B1 and has been used to control malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. The drug is effective against the larvae and adult stages of the mosquito life cycle, but not oviposition (egg laying) by adults. Larvae are killed by contact with water in which the concentration of the drug exceeds 100 ppm (parts per million). The drug is also effective against other pests, such as head lice, scabies mites, and black flies. The drug is excreted in the feces for up to two weeks after administration. This makes it possible to detect its use through sensitive analytical methods and to help identify strategies for high-level concentrations in specific geographical regions.
