1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide is a cationic surfactant that belongs to the group of ionic liquids. It has been shown to have a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of water and can be used as a solvent in organic synthesis. 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide is also an excellent solubilizer for hydrophobic compounds, including 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-hmf). The reaction mechanism for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide can be described as nucleophilic substitution reactions with chitosan polymer. Hydrochloric acid catalyzes the first step in this reaction by converting the chloride ion from the salt into hydrochloric acid, which then reacts with the amine group on chitosan polymer. This creates an amide bond between the two molecules and releases hydrogen gas
