Beschreibung

Ertapenem is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the class of carbapenems. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins in bacterial cell walls and inhibits cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. Ertapenem has been shown to be effective against gram-positive bacteria and has good activity against Enterobacteriaceae. The drug also has a matrix effect, which means it can penetrate the encapsulated bacteria that have a thick peptidoglycan layer. Ertapenem is administered intravenously or intramuscularly as an injection. The antibiotic is not absorbed orally and should not be taken with food or milk products because they may reduce its absorption rate. Ertapenem's efficacy can be affected by other drugs, such as aminoglycosides and tetracyclines, which can decrease its concentration in blood plasma by increasing the amount of ertapenem that is excreted through the kidneys or liver.
