Elcatonin is a hormone that regulates the level of calcium in the blood. It is a peptide composed of nine amino acids and has a disulfide bond. Elcatonin is found in the pituitary gland and has been shown to regulate the body mass index and glomerular filtration rate. It also inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which has been shown to be beneficial in treating arthritis, osteoporosis, and diabetic neuropathy. Elcatonin is synthesized from calcitonin by removing one amino acid at a time from the N-terminus of calcitonin with specific enzymes, such as malonic acid decarboxylase or fatty acid synthase. The elcatonin peptide can then be purified using preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (preparative HPLC).
