- 3-(Ethyldisulfanyl)-2-Methylfuran
- Ethyl-2-methyl-3-furyl disulfide
- Furan, 3-(ethyldithio)-2-methyl-
3-(Ethyldithio)-2-methyl-fUran is an organofluorine compound that is used as a food additive. 3-(Ethyldithio)-2-methyl-fUran has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth and can be used to inhibit the growth of Gram positive bacteria, such as those that are resistant to antibiotics. 3-(Ethyldithio)-2-methyl-fUran inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
