2-Ethyl-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol is an organic compound that can be produced by oxidizing trimethylolpropane. The enzyme responsible for this transformation is a peroxidase. This reaction may be optimized by varying the temperature and pH. Due to its high solubility in water, 2-ethyl-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol can be used as a carbon source for microbial growth. It has been shown to have oxidative activity on soil samples and can induce the production of erythritol from the substrate D-(+)-xylose. The enantiomeric purity of 2EMPD can be controlled by chemical synthesis or enzymatic resolution.
