Ethyl 4-methyl-5-thiazoleactate is a potent compound that belongs to the class of 2-hydroxythiazole. It has been shown to be active against bacteria and fungi, as well as being a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth. Although this compound is not very stable, it can be synthesized from formamide and ethyl thiazole-4-carboxylate. This process requires the use of hydrogen chloride and yields are low due to the instability of the intermediate product 2-hydroxythiazole.
This drug has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by deaminating purine or pyrimidine bases in DNA or RNA. Ethyl 4-methyl-5-thiazoleactate also binds to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing enzyme activity that maintains the integrity of bacterial DNA. The chlorine atom in this drug reacts with amines in proteins, forming oxychloride derivatives that react with nucleoph
