FMK is a drug that was originally developed for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. It is now being investigated for its possible use in cancer, autoimmune and other degenerative diseases. FMK inhibits protease activity and has been shown to be effective at reducing the activity of inflammatory genes. FMK binds to regulatory domains on the gene product, which prevents it from activating an inflammatory response. FMK also has anti-inflammatory properties, inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). The molecular weight of FMK is 598.9 Da and its chemical name is 2-[6-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-(methylsulfonyl)ethoxy]hexyl]-N-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzyl)benzenesulfonamide.
