It has been shown to inhibit the growth of animal viruses in cell culture, including influenza A, Newcastle disease virus, and vesicular stomatitis virus. 2-Formylhydrazinecarbothioamide also inhibits the production of carcinogenic molecules that are produced by tobacco smoke, such as nitrosamines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The molecular structure of 2-formylhydrazinecarbothioamide is similar to ethionamide, which is an antituberculosis drug.
