Fenitrothion is a carbamate insecticide that is used to control insects and mites. Fenitrothion has been shown to have significant effects on the ryanodine receptor, an intracellular calcium ion channel that regulates the release of calcium from sarcoplasmic reticulum in muscle cells. This inhibition causes muscle paralysis and death. Fenitrothion also inhibits the activities of enzymes involved in energy metabolism, including ATPase, phosphofructokinase, malate dehydrogenase, and pyruvate kinase. Fenitrothion is toxic to arthropods such as mosquitoes, cockroaches, and moths. It is also highly toxic to mammals such as dogs and rabbits. The LD50 for fenitrothion in rats was found to be 11 mg/kg body weight when administered orally.
Fenitrothion has been shown to be less toxic than other carbamates such as methomyl or carbofuran when tested
