Ferroin indicator solution is a model system that can be used to study the oxidation-reduction reactions of iron. It is an acidic solution with a pH of 2, which contains surfactant sodium dodecyl and potassium dichromate as the reducing agent. Ferroin indicator solution is usually prepared by adding ferric chloride to a mixture of ferrous sulfate and sodium dodecyl sulfate in water. Ferroin indicator solution has been used to measure the activity of enzymes such as catalase, peroxidase, and glucose oxidase in human serum. This reaction can be monitored by measuring the change in color from red to blue-green. The redox potential for ferroin indicator solution is -0.4 volts, which means that it is an oxidizing agent.
