3-((((9H-Fluoren-9-yl)methoxy)carbonyl)amino)-4-phenylbutanoic acid (FLC) is a chemical compound that activates the enzyme protein kinase C. It is a fluorescent, mitochondria uncoupler that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cells. FLC also has cytotoxic effects on human oral cancer and bladder cancer cells. FLC activates the protein kinase C in the cytoplasm and prevents it from being degraded by extracellular proteases, which leads to an increase in mitochondrial membrane permeability. This results in mitochondrial membrane hyperpolarization and cell death.
