Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. It is a selective H1 antagonist that binds to the histamine receptor, blocking the action of histamine and preventing it from binding to cells in the body. Fexofenadine is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, with CYP3A4 being the major enzyme involved. Fexofenadine has been found to inhibit P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in human and mouse models, which may increase its bioavailability. Fexofenadine also has a good pharmacokinetic profile and does not significantly affect drug metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes when taken together with other drugs. This drug is classified as pregnancy category C and may have excretion into breast milk.
