2-Fluoro-N-methylaniline is an organic compound that is synthesized by the reaction of propionate with a diazonium salt. The 2-fluoroaniline product can be hydrolyzed to produce formic acid and ammonium chloride, which can be used as a synthetic precursor for various other organic compounds. It can also be prepared by the reaction of nitrite with hydrochloric acid in the presence of formic acid or ammonolysis. The process yields a high yield and is useful in food chemistry because it is not toxic. 2-Fluoro-N-methylaniline has been shown to cause population growth in mice, rats, hamsters, and guinea pigs.
